Are Goals & Resolutions Overrated?

New-Year-2014-Countdown-Clock-Wallpaper-DownloadPossibly, quite possibly, the idea of setting goals for the new year is overrated.  Particularly in my case, where I simply change the year on the old list from 2013 to 2014, there appears to be little rhyme nor reason.

But hope springs eternal.

Writing them down gives focus, even if your focus seems to fizzle out somewhere along the way by the tyranny of the urgent.  Hey, let’s face it, a lot of folks thdon’t even know where they should be headed, so I feel blessed to have a strong inner compass, at least.

Like everyone else, I’ve read the research:  goals must be measurable and specific in order to work.  They need to be challenging, and yet not overwhelming.  The resolutions should be motivational, instead of miserable and disheartening.

smart-goalsWhich they can become if you never act on them.

So, here I am, getting fired up about what I can.  There are some things in life that we cannot control, but, I preach to myself, there’s a whole lot that we can control.  And since control is my middle name, it may be time that I start controlling myself.

One year from now, as I glance back at another year gone by, may it not be said of me, “The older I get, the better I was.”

Instead, this year, I vow to renew, refresh, and rebuild.  Starting with myself.

Happy New Year!  Wishing you blessing, health, and joy to you and yours.
