Celebrating Independence

diBarbeques, beaches, fireworks and family – that’s how the Fourth of July is celebrated by many Americans. We celebrate freedom and independence from Great Britain, but what exactly happened on that date?

Independence was declared on July 2nd, when the final draft of the declaration was submitted, the very fancy draft was signed by “John HANCOCK” and others on August 2nd. The American Revolution, of course, started in April 1775. So what was July 4th?

The Continental Congress approved the final wording of the Declaration of trumbull-large1Independence on July 4, 1776.

That’s it. But enough to change the course of history.

Consider the words that come to us over the centuries, from the original thirteen states to the fifty-plus of the present day. As you Declaration-of-Independencemay attend a parade, ride on horse-drawn wagons, watch (hopefully not participate in-!) a pie-eating contest, go to a religious service and concert, or enjoy fireworks and family picnics, let this excerpt of words resound in your heart, applicable for then, appropriate for now:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created independence_day1equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness….”
