Celebrating the Season with ZooLights-!

IMG_2505Here’s a fabulous holiday treat for those living in or visiting the DC/MD/VA area between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo, located in uptown Washington, DC, on Connecticut Avenue, NW, hosts an annual light display with more than 500,000 eco-friendly LED lights. It’s free, and it’s open from 5:00-9:00 pm most every night (check online for specifics).

The display is sponsored by Pepco, as well as a number of IMG_2507smaller partners. The lights celebrate the zoo animals and nature. Frankly, it’s spectacular.

The approximately mile-long main pathway provides a nice walk with a bit of an incline to make it interesting. Couples, families with children, and an international crowd snap photos everywhere. A number of the animal houses stay open, along with food and drink options, a visitor’s center, gift shops, restrooms, model train and lego displays, plus a gingerbread contest.

IMG_2508For little ones, you can try the zoo choo-choo or the carousel. They could go tubing down one of the three 150’ long snowless slides. Any of these extras cost only $3 per ride. Or, the strolling Panda Claws (a big, lovable, Santa Claus wannabe) enjoys hugs and posing for photos.

While you’re there, learn more about supporting animal IMG_2514enrichment, adopting a species, or helping the zoo build a bear cave. Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) always has something going on… and our family was so happy to be drawn in by their lights.
