Diet Soda is Out

healthy-foodI knew it, I just knew it. After my doctor revealed that my new portion size is one-half of one carrot, with perhaps 1/4 of a brussel sprout thrown in for good measure, I could not find the most likely culprit hindering my Slim Jim makeover.

A pile of spinach? A tiny tub of Greek yogurt? A salad full of greens and no dressing? A workout at the gym?

Now, all has become clear. According to a study by Dr. Sharon P.G.Diet-soda-can Fowler of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio it’s diet soda that causes gains in abdominal fat. She states that the causality can’t quite be proven, yet a distinct link is found in observational studies.

In other words, it could be as twisted as you drink that diet whatever… and then go for the brownie, the pizza, the burger and fries on the side.

diet-soda3-232x300Oh, come on. Everyone knows which foods are probably higher calorie than others. Are they suggesting that the diet soda in and of itself is harming you? Or that you’re giving yourself license to eat other fattening foods because you’re being “good” by having the diet drink?

That would be the former. It’s actually the chemicals in the diet soda.

This is not a totally new observation. However, it’s yet another study to nail the coffin on your one little pleasure in life. It’s back to bread and water. Minus the bread. And make that whole wheat, whole grain, extra fiber in case you’re even thiking in that direction….

Never mind that the study was done at the end of the 1990s in folks over 65 who drank diet soda every day, neither of which fit my profile. But listen to the findings: they followed the folks for nine years and those who drank no diet soda gained 0.8 inches in their waist, those who had an occasional diet soda gained 1.83 inches, and those who drank soda every day gained more than 3.0 inches in their waist circumference.

I guess it’s like they always say: water is the elixir of life. Bye-bye, diet soda.
