Giving Thanks on Thanksgiving Day

indexWhen you gather with family or friends, or even have a simple meal by yourself, do you pause to give thanks to the Lord? Is it truly “Thanksgiving Day” or just “Turkey Day”?

For our family, Thanksgiving Day happens more than once a year, it’s truly every day. Our children have been delivered out of neglect and abuse in Russia, adopted home as preteens and enjoying a brand new life. My husband has been delivered out of a life-threatening illness, miraculously healed even when the doctors did not offer us much hope. I have been delivered from… I don’t know… myself and my own paths and thpurposes.

We are thankful for food and water, a roof over our heads, family and friends and dogs, the basics that are not so basic for many on Planet Earth. For us, it’s a joy to keep God at the center of it all. Love it. It’s not all about us.

According to Pew Research, about 44 percent of Americans report that they say grace daily or more often, with 46 percent weighing in at occasionally or never praying at meals, and 10 percent offering a blessing once or twice a week. So slightly more are praying than those who don’t, but I believe that on this day, even if it’s going around the table and pausing, if not praying, thinking of what you’re grateful for is a special moment.

Family Praying Before Dinner ca. 2001And for those who would like to pray, but “don’t know how to”, it’s truly speaking to the Lord from your heart. You could reference an online prayer or take two minutes to learn the structure of a more traditional prayer if you wished.  Learn if your goal is to bless the Lord, or bless the food.  Or, you could read a chapter from the Bible that expresses someone else’s gratitude to God.

Here’s Psalm 34 from King David before he was actually king and the current ruler, King Saul, was chasing him and trying to kill him out of sheer jealousy. (If you ever think you’re having a bad day….) Let the words encourage you this Thanksgiving Day.

Psalm 34Thanksgiving-Prayer-Norman-Rockwell-Saturday-Evening-Post

“I will bless the Lord at all times;

His praise shall continually be in my mouth.

2 My soul shall make its boast in the Lord;

The humble shall hear of it and be glad.

3 Oh, magnify the Lord with me,

And let us exalt His name together.

4 I sought the Lord, and He heard me,

And delivered me from all my fears.

5 They looked to Him and were radiant,

And their faces were not ashamed.

6 This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him,prayer_pilgrims

And saved him out of all his troubles.

7 The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him,

And delivers them.

8 Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good;

Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!

9 Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints!

There is no want to those who fear Him.

10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger;

But those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.

11 Come, you children, listen to me;

I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

12 Who is the man who desires life,

And loves many days, that he may see good?thanksgiving-prayer

13 Keep your tongue from evil,

And your lips from speaking deceit.

14 Depart from evil and do good;

Seek peace and pursue it.

15 The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,

And His ears are open to their cry.

16 The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,

To cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

17 The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears,

And delivers them out of all their troubles.

18 The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart,prayer

And saves such as have a contrite spirit.

19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous,

But the Lord delivers him out of them all.

20 He guards all his bones;

Not one of them is broken.

21 Evil shall slay the wicked,

And those who hate the righteous shall be condemned.

22 The Lord redeems the soul of His servants,

And none of those who trust in Him shall be condemned.”
