God Bless America–Now More Than Ever

Patriotic-SaluteThis patriotic song was written by Irving Berlin (born Israel Baline) in 1918 and revised by him in 1938. He had arrived in America from Russia at the age of 5 and became concerned with Hitler’s rise to power after serving America in WWI. The song was recorded by Kate Smith and released on Armistice Day 1938.  What most of us don’t know is that it was designed as a prayer with some introductory words preceding.

What could be more appropriate for this Fourth of July?

“While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,god_bless_america
let us swear allegiance to a land that’s free.
Let us all be grateful for a land so fair, as we
raise our voices in a solemn prayer.

“God Bless America, land that I love.
Stand beside her and guide her
Through the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans white with foam.
God Bless America, my home sweet home.
God Bless America, my home sweet home.”

Amen.  Happy Fourth of July, everyone!
