Holidays are Here: Zoolights!

img_4002It’s that time of year in Washington, DC, when Pepco, along with other businesses sponsor the most amazing display of Christmas lights at the National Zoo.img_4004

Whether still lights or high-tech dancing displays, each feature is more spectacular than the last.img_4010

Most show animals, of course, whether on land or by sea. But there are the shooting stars and the twinkling snowflakes, and the light-wrapped trees without which, we could not live. The fuchsias, blues, reds, violets and greens raise their colors to entirely-new heights in hues.img_4012

It’s awesome, it’s free and it’s held from Thanksgiving to New Year’s each year. Visit from 5 to 9 pm for thousands of lights, lots of visitors enjoying the pedestrian outdoor event. Even a few of the animal exhibits are open at night, just to warm you up should you need to step inside. Plus, there are drinks, snacks and Build-Your-Own-S’mores for sale.img_4014

We visited the holiday train exhibit, which naturally winds through groups of animals.img_4007

There’s also the gingerbread competition with its safari theme that’s sure to delight, from its simple to sublime offerings.img_4005

However, most of all, the light and laser shows outdoors mesmerize even the most miserly this holiday season. From toddlers to teens, strolling couples to entire families, you can walk from one end to another in under an hour, along with stops for photos and entering a building or two. Or, take longer and make it a leisurely night.img_4011

Where else in the city can you stroll and be safe, walk and be wowed, all while celebrating wildlife under starry and sparkly skies?img_4016
