Holidays in the City

thI love my city, Washington, DC. Even though we reside there half a week and love our other location, too, there’s something special about holidays in the city. Maybe I’ve been watching too many “Eloise at the Plaza” and “Home Alone 2” movies with the kids over the years….

Here we enjoy the National Christmas Tree (a little Pelosi Presides Over Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremonytoo perfect-looking) and the National Hanukkah Menorah right across from The White House’s South Lawn. Used to be that everyone could drive right by these, but those days are gone forever. Now you need to park and hoof it.

Another fun Christmas tree is on the Capitol’s north side, tall and slender, and very approachable. Makes me feel good about the government even if it’s just because of a tree.

Last week, we turned the corner and came upon a family home having a Hanukkah party with hanukkiyot (Hanukkah menorahs) burning candles in every window.

Huge nutcrackers stand guard outside a couple of restaurants that I know. Jazzy Christmas carols play on streetcorners, skaters glide at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink, and if you make a slight effort, you may be the best-dressed person on the block, since relaxed tourists are everywhere.

Come and join in the joy of holidays in the city!
