How a Gym Can Sabotage Physical Fitness

thSo we joined the gym in early January. Wrong move because everyone joins the gym then. The place is constantly packed. And quite frankly, that’s interfering with my plans.

“When do you want to go?” I ask my son, who is doubling as my personal trainer, not that he’s a trainer, but he’s pretty fit and he can explain the equipment and that’s about all I need right now.

“How about at 10:30 pm?”

I don’t like this scenario, but late at night is one of the few times the gym is not overcrowded. It gets me home after 11:30 pm andcrowded-gym-not-fun then I have to shower, and wind-down because exercise gives you a lift and doesn’t really make you feel like sleeping right away. And then I have to rise at 3:30 or 5:00 am for the next day’s activities.

They say the gym is also packed from 5:00 am to 9:00 am. Plus, I certainly don’t relish the idea of rising early to get into the gym by 4:00 am.

So I figure the late morning or early afternoon may be my prime 628x471time for gym gyrations. Nope, apparently not. Tons of twenty- and thirty-somethings.

Don’t these people work???

Must be night work.

Bottom line is, the gym is preventing me from getting in shape. Prior to this, I would go for a walk-run most mornings out in God’s great creation. Doesn’t matter how hot or cold it is, but I’m telling you, ice on the pavement can be hazardous to your health, walking1too. Now I wait until odd times to hit the gym, until I realize too late that it’s too crowded, or I’m too tired to go late at night.

Back I return to my tried-and-true pattern of my early-morning walk-run in nature. I like the fresh air since I’m inside working or in meetings most days and nights. It’s envigorating.

I’m not giving up on the gym. I’ve enjoyed the few times I’ve been so far. I hear that participation drops after the first couple of months of the year, so then I’ll spring into action in an even greater way.

After all, I can’t let a gym stand between me and physical fitness.
