Land of the Free, Home of the Brave

That’s the land of the free, not land of the idiots.  (Just in case Egypt doesn’t get that.)

In a strange move, particularly given America’s Fourth of July holiday this week (Independence Day), President Mohammed Morsi, Egypt’s new radical Islamist leader and poster boy of the Muslim Brotherhood, pressed for the release of the blind Sheikh already tried and convicted of attempting to kill thousands of Americans in the 1990s.  You gotta be kidding.  His planned targets included New York City bridges, tunnels and the United Nations, a distinct foreshadowing and trial run for 9/11.

Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman is serving a life sentence for his role in these foiled plots.  And now the Egyptian President is calling for his release-?  What is it about justice that this guy simply doesn’t get?

In America, we tend to favor a “live and let live” mentality and lifestyle.  We allow each other their differences, while working together for the common good.  Even the smallest hometowns now have diverse populations from all over the world.

As immigrants, we come into the great melting pot known as America to make a decent life for ourselves and our families.  But what some from within and without do not understand is that freedom means the pursuit of happiness, not the wanton destruction of other human beings.

America is a great nation for many reasons, but our greatness is in question when our moral courage is being challenged.  Thank you to those politicians who have the inner strength to rattle the sabres right back in Morsi’s face and in essence, invoke the same phrase used by early American Colonists:  “Don’t Tread on Me”.

Maybe we should let the Sheikh mingle with the general prison population and learn a thing or two about American life from the other inmates.   After all, how would an American be treated in an Egyptian jail if he tried to annhilate thousands?  Maybe our justice in America needs to be swifter and stronger, giving those in Egypt something to really talk about.

Happy Fourth of July!
