L’Shana Tova 5775

RoshHashanah2014Happy New Year! Wednesday night through Friday night this week marks the start of the Jewish New Year 5775. This begins the High Holy Days, the Days of Awe, when folks examine their ways leading up to Yom Kippor, the Day of Atonement.

On Rosh Hashana, “the head of the year”, we enjoy apples dipped in honey, and desserts incorporating similar sweetness and wishes for a sweet new year. There might be pomegranates and dates on the table, a round bread as part of the special festive meals, holiday finery, and the repeated blowing of the shofar in the synagogue.

The introspection causes hearts to ask what could be better, or Rosh-Hashanah-pomagranite1improved in one’s life, as well as how to draw near to God. For many, the spiritual stock-taking has led to unabashed attempts at self-improvement… apart from God.

Is that possible? Can humanity reach our full potential apart from meeting with the Lord?

Personal effort goes a long way, for sure. But there’s a place where our rosh-hashanahenergies are exhausted and He lifts us higher and farther than we might have gone on our own, along with the realization that it’s not all about us.  And that makes for a sweet year.

As if that weren’t enough, our eldest boy turns 18 today. So, our cup is definitely overflowing.

Happy New Year to you and yours!
