Monday Mottoes – #189

Mother's DayAs Mother’s Day approaches, I read over quotes that span from sentimental to morbid. Everybody’s got something to say about mothers and our crowd definitely inspires strong emotions one way or another.

Mothers: love ‘em or leave ‘em. There seems to be no sentiments in-between.

If you were to ask me, every day should be Mother’s Day. At least I treated it thusly in regards to my own mom, celebrating her, helping her, commiserating with her. She was wonderful, particularly when she wasn’t irritating me.

I guess it comes with the territory.

Therefore, today we have two quotes concerning mothers, one more commonsense, one more humorous. The first comes from Ann mothers-dayLanders, advice columnist extraordinaire:

“It is not what you do for your children, but what you have taught them to do for themselves, that will make them successful human beings.” ~Ann Landers

Can I hear an “amen” on that one? Let the kids push and struggle, just a little bit, and become the butterfly emerging from its cocoon. If you do everything for them, they have no need to grow and progress.

Which brings us to our fun mother’s motto for the day, from an American novelist:

mothers-day“If there were no schools to take the children away from home part of the time, the insane asylums would be filled with mothers.” ~E. W. Howe

As a homeschooling parent, I believe this could explain a lot-! On that note, always keep in mind that those who don’t have children, often envy those who do, and those who do have children, often envy those who do not. Wherever you are in life, it’s good. And with a bit of effort, it can be better. So go for it.

Happy upcoming Mother’s Day, everyone! Why not celebrate all week long?
