Destinations, Dreams and Dogs - International adventure with a fast-track family (& dogs) of Old World values, adopting the Russian-Italian-American good life on the go…!

Monday Mottoes – #209

thToday our eldest son turns 21. For all intents and purposes, he should be 13, not because of any immaturity on his part, but because we adopted him when he was almost 8 and I would have loved to have been his mother for all 21 years.

We’ve made up for lost time with adventures all around the world. He and I are two peas in a pod with similar life views and a keen sense of what’s what. It’s been fun to see him grow and develop up till now when his girlfriend flew in for a long weekend spent with our family, enjoying time together with all of us, as well as their own field trips and coffees out.

I consider his many excellent qualities, from being a hard worker, to being compassionate, being businesslike, to being enthusiastic, being spiritual, to being generous. He’s the complete package and I’m so blessed that we brought him home from Russia so long ago.

Petya didn’t know what to think and neither did we. But we all forged forward and it turned out for the best.

So, he and I drove half the night in order to take his girlfriend to the airport and head on our own way. Now I need to bake him a cake. Better stop dawdling and get on to today’s motto which has very little to do with Petya’s mentality, however, is funny and poignant in its Twainown right:

“When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.” ~ Mark Twain

Twenty-one is a time to take stock and assess how much we’ve learned, where we’ve come from, and where we’re headed. All of us should experience the wonder and wow of our 21st birthday time and time again if it results in making us more reflective.

But for now, all eyes are on Petya. Happy birthday, Big Guy! We’re so proud of you and love you.

Happy Monday, everyone!
