Monday Mottoes – #210

AnniversaryrLater this week, Benedetto and I will celebrate numerous years of wedded bliss. As with anything long-term, some days are good and other days are better. With the passage of years and decades, people often ask, what is the secret of your marital success?

For me, wise sage that I am, I would say that a successful marriage boils down to one thing: be nice. So many other things could be cited, but honestly, few couples ever agree on the basics of communication, childrearing, finances and so much more. They agree to disagree.

But being nice about it, or ugly about it, can make all the difference.

Give yourself a self-test when it’s not your mate’s anniversary or birthday. How much glue holds you together? Or do you scorch and burn as familiarity breeds contempt?

Think it through: Do you use kind or demeaning words on a daily basis? Do you plan outings great or small as a couple— meeting for Happy Anniversarycoffee, a meal out, driving or walking a few minutes to a picturesque location to watch the sunrise or sunset, going for a daily consititutional? Do you leave love notes or cards for each other upon occasion? Do you say, “I love you” at least once a day?

It’s not the anniversary numbers or events which tell the entire story. It’s the everyday life.

Which brings us to today’s motto:

“Chains do not hold a marriage together. It is threads, hundreds of tiny threads, which sew people together through the years.” ~ Simone Signoret

anniToday, sew a beautiful garment, add threads to the tapestry to surround and protect your marriage from the cold of approaching winter. Be intentional. Just as you would never allow a business, a car, or a home suffer the effects of neglect and disrepair, give attention to your relationship. Schedule maintenance days, if you must. Make it warm and welcoming. Things only fall apart through abandonment or a failure to look after them. A little time and effort will pay off for you, as well as your mate. Nurture the love of your life.

Happy Monday, everyone!
