Monday Mottoes – #43

quotes-1196In honor of the recent Russia Day (Dyen Rossiya) on whch Petya’s graduation ceremony fell, today we have a quote from a great Russian, Lev Tolstoy. The writer had insightful perspective on human nature, and how we often make goals such as “change” into bigger deals than they need be. In his novels, Tolstoy would use characters and circumstances to press his protagonists into the crucible of change.

It’s no different today. We can change either from outside influences or from inward motivation. Which brings us to today’s motto:

“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” ~Leo Tolstoy

How many of us have the get-up-and-go to change ourselves? Often, we look for ways to bail out of the difficult and take refuge in the easy and comfortable path. We might even focus on grandiose projects to change How-can-a-relationship-change-your-lifesociety around us, while refusing to address the here-and-now under our nose.

It all matters. One affects the other.

Fashioning a strong family where everyone learns how to work together may lead to world peace. Losing weight and exercising could cause cancer possibilities to plummet. And practicing politeness might bring a smile to someone’s face.

When we change ourselves, we change the world.

Happy Monday, everyone!
