Monday Mottoes – #45

15d085623d6b744e71ecfc30f10d0a8bI recall my first-ever summer job. I had just turned 16 and felt that it was time to start earning some shekels. At the time, about the most glamorous position I could imagine was to apprentice myself to an attorney—answering the phone, typing, running papers downtown to court.

Going methodically through the phone book, I telephoned every lawyer within 30 minutes of our home. One recognized our unusual family name as being members of the same country club. He had no work, but gave me some advice and best wishes. Bolstered, I carried on with my search, checking off each name.

My goal-oriented outlook served me well. I knew what hours I could work each day, while attending morning summer school in an effort to skip a year of high school. It all worked out and soon I had the position of my dreams.

My new boss had divorced and took off for weeks at a time with his new bride. They would bicycle through remote and OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAromantic countrysides on wine-and-cheese tasting tours, many time zones away from the office. Each day, he dictated two hours of phone messages for me on an ancient recording machine made up of wax cylinders. At 16 years old, I was in charge of the office.

He insisted that I write down in a leather-bound diary everything I touched: files, interrogatories, wills, binders, you name it. If I made phone calls, they had to be entered into the diary. When I traveled to court, it was recorded. I saw the huge to-do lists being whittled down day by day and learned how much I could accomplish.

It works with “To-Do Lists” and it works with “To-Be Lists”. Clarify where you’re headed and you slash the time it takes to arrive there, compared with someone who just hopes to wind up in the right place at the right time.

Plan, plan, plan, and write those goals. Then, write the first few steps you need to move in that direction. Then proceed to do it.

Happy Monday, everyone!
