Monday Mottoes – #82

man-jugglingRecently, I’ve perused quotes and opinions about balancing the many aspects of life. They range from suggesting we give up before even trying to balance the disparate parts, to encouraging that we give it our best shot because all of it matters so very much.

Each of them in some way makes sense to me. So, here’s the first one and today’s quote:

“Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air. You name them –work, family, health, friends and spirit and you’re keeping all of these in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls — family, health, friends and spirit are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for balance in your life.” ~ Brian Dyson, former vice chairman and COO of Coca-Cola.

I like that. It’s rational and realistic. While I’m not sure that some kinds of work can always bounce 3650151941_ca9e1770b0back, I’d like to believe that. I’d like to believe that work is the one thing that might not matter in the long run like the proverb about a dying person never saying that she wants to spend more time in the office.

You never know, maybe she did wish for more time at her career, but she was too polite to mention it at such a sensitive time as her demise….

Nevertheless, family, health, friends, and spirit strike me as vital components of a well-spent life. If anything, these would be the glass balls that should never be dropped. What excellent advice and a meaningful metaphor.

Even for those of us who are no good at juggling and tend to throw ourselves into whatever with gusto, we need to remember to give all aspects of our life their turn. Don’t neglect one for the other because they’re all vital to your well-being. So despite whether or not we feel it’s entirely doable, today we can strive for balance.

Happy Monday, everyone!
