Destinations, Dreams and Dogs - International adventure with a fast-track family (& dogs) of Old World values, adopting the Russian-Italian-American good life on the go…!

Monday Mug Club #13

Like father, like son.  Today’s entry is not so much for the cup, but for the feeling behind it.  Once an adventurer, always an adventurer, it says to me.

My first son and I have enjoyed traveling together extensively.  In the beginning, it was because our son only spoke Russian and his father understood about half of what was being said, if that much.  So I became used to taking Petya here and there, wherever I needed to go, and he was a good traveler.

Part of the fun for him was in the experimentation of new foods and drinks.  From sahlab, the hot-milk-almost-pudding-like drink made from orchids, to fresh pomegranate juice, and thick-as-melted-chocolate hot cocoa, our son took great delight in any type of innovative food or drink.

So it was no surprise when he, like his father, tried yet another interesting combo, in yet another international locale.  Sniffing each tea packet displayed in an elegant wooden box, he finally settled on his selection.

“What are you having?” I asked him.

“Passiflora,” he replied matter-of-factly.

“What?” I asked.

“Passiflora,” he repeated in Hebrew, unsure of the word in English.  “Remember the greenish fruit that Tatiana gave us from the vine growing in her courtyard?  The very fragrant purple and white flowers?”  This was in a lovely garden oasis near the Negev Desert in the south of Israel.

Turns out he was referring to the passionflower fruit, or passion fruit, often used, unbeknownst to him, to treat those suffering from anxiety or insomnia, none of which would ever be bothering this young man-!  The passion fruit tea was combined with mango and a twist of lemon, to give a proper start to yet another day of travel.  At 4:00 am, it hit the spot and reminded me of his father, generally very ready to try new things and go new places.  How did they turn out so similar?

The tall cup, the tea slowly diffusing like wisps of smoke through the hot water, a few crystals of sugar raining down, the smile on my son’s face….

May you have plenty of passion and energy for the day ahead.  Happy Monday, everyone!
