My Daughter’s Parisian Birthday

IMG_3511Our oldest daughter, Mashenka, turned 17 last week. We’re still just now recovering, lol. Since she and another of the kids are studying French in addition to their other languages, I thought it might be fun to have a Parisian theme.

Basically, we went with every cliché in the book. I baked her a marble cake with an Eiffel Tower on top. She wore a beret. We had Parisian plates and napkins for the cake. Everyone wished her a “Bon Anniversaire!”

That morning, the kids enjoyed croissants and other pastries with delicious jams and Nutella. She was thrilled. I mean, how can you go wrong with Nutella???

Mashenka was growing up. She wore her tangerine jeans and went for a speedboat ride.IMG_3513

Laughing easily, we remembered her arrival from Russia almost six years ago after turning 11. We made her a cake even then, when we had missed her birthday by a couple of months. It was the thought that counted.

Birthdays could be difficult. Adoptees might consider that the day of their birth was not necessarily a happy occasion. But times had changed, and this year, Mashenka seemed to be able to leave any negatives of the past behind.

And that was worth celebrating.
