Netanyahu Knows Best

img566508Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech before the US Congress eliciting everything from attacks to applause both here and abroad. With his own re-election approaching in Israel, this was not the best time for him to come to America to be critiqued this way and that.

I have my own novel take on why he might have come to Congress: he believes that the US and Israel have shared interests thconcerning international security.

However, common interests without common experience meant that Netanyahu had a lot to offer American leaders, namely, the voice of reality. When else do we hear that Iran carried out a military exercise blowing up a mock US aircraft carrier just last week, while we are “negotiating” with them?

Here is a foreign head of state who comes to bumper-sticker-bibi-netanyahubasically warn us, help us, give us a heads-up and what’s our reaction? About 43 rounds of applause and numerous standing ovations as this statesman par excellence speaks respectfully and appropriately even in the face of his detractors.

Take for instance Netanyahu’s inspiring sadness and tears in Nancy Pelosi, to CNN’s Christiane Amanpour’s bizarre comments, “It was a very dark, Strangelovian speech, painting the picture of a dystopian world, raising the spectre of a genocidal nation, a genocidal regime spraying nuclear weapons to annihilate the whole world and the whole region”, to MSNBC’s Chris Matthews asserting that “Netanyahu ‘tried to take over U.S. foreign policy’”.

Were they listening to the same speech that I heard? Respectful, well-researched, resonating withpurimyahu those who know the region.

Is it easier to do nothing and wish for the best, and hope that bad guys will one day turn into good guys? Sure, that’s why Israel and America have opposition parties, but we’ve already been taking a low-key international intervention stance and bullies on the block are proliferating. So along comes a friend from Israel to let us know that this approach is not in our own best interests, nor theirs.

And that’s objectionable?

Friends don’t let friends do something dangerous. Thank you, Mr. Prime Minister, for being strong and courageous enough to say it.
