One-Room Schoolhouse

IMG_4798After the Civil War, free public education became a reality for some states with constitutions providing it. At the time, such education was designated for white children only.

Utilizing donated land, structures such as this 1887 one-room schoolhouse were constructed, all the more noteworthy because it’s still standing where it was originally built. When the local white children moved to a newer school in the nearby IMG_4799town, African-American students came here to learn. Continuing until its close in 1964, the notion of a segregated school seems so passe, yet here it is, standing in silent testimony to what once was.

We’ve come a long way.
