Polygamy and Public Opinion

thAs with some reality shows, those centering around polygamy have become well-publicized train wrecks, or freak shows, if you will. The main point of “Sister Wives” or “My Five Wives” is to depict that polygamists are regular people, just like the rest of us.

Right. You gotta be kidding.

Instead, shows like this depict a man taking charge of confused and conflicted women who have minds of their own… yet don’t seem comfortable using them.

I would imagine that their goal involves earning a bit of respect for their way of life, not necessarily converting anyone thto polygamy. But this does just the opposite. While it gives the idea of multiple wives a human face, that face looks to be pretty depressed, in my opinion.

Does he love me? Does he love another “wife” more than he loves me? Will there be enough resources to go around? Why do I get only one night per week with my own husband?

Their kids don’t appear to be any better off, and as a child navigates adolescence it’s hard enough, but this doesn’t seem right for them, either.

Who thought up this crazy idea? And why in the world would anyone want to publicize such a lifestyle? It’s wrong on so many levels.

I feel sorry for the ladies who are being sold a lie, while grappling with what they feel is an attempt to do the right thing. In the final analysis, polygamy is a power trip, with the women losing out on any power at all.

Could not agree with your more Alexandra! Very very strange and heartrending if you think about it. The women are selling themselves short.
