Destinations, Dreams and Dogs - International adventure with a fast-track family (& dogs) of Old World values, adopting the Russian-Italian-American good life on the go…!

Pretty Posies

IMG_1354Sashenka, our 12-1/2-year-old, was walking the dogs in the large backyard at the dacha.  She returned with a pocket full of posies for me.  Her older sister was having another massively manic meltdown and it touched me that Sashenka would think of some kindness to share at this particular moment.  I slipped them in my espresso cup, kissed her, and smiled.

It was not the first time that she had brought me a handful of flowers… or weeds… or whatever they were, they were pretty. I pondered how some of us can see beauty, and have a soft place in their heart, while others very rarely can see anything beyond their own problems and internal sufferings.

It’s a point of view, a worldview, an inner compass that allows one to reach beyond herself even during difficult times.  A small gesture can mean so much.

To cheer those around us, it often doesn’t take much.  A few posies, a warm smile, a cup of tea.  “Be there” today, and let others know you care.

How sweet! Sometimes the joy that one child brings us is just what we need to get us through the day with another one of our kids ….
This reminds me of a conversation I had with a good friend of mine who also adopted an older child from Russia (11 years ago). One day over coffee I was expressing my frustration in how I try to nurture and love my daughters the same way but one of them just blooms for me and the other makes me tear my hair out. She said, “Friend, remember that one of them is an exotic flower and the other is a cactus. You need to care for them differently for them to grow.”
    So true!!
