Sweet & Sour Children

happy-sad1In Chinese food, sweet and sour combos are fine, such as pineapple and vinegar added to a chicken and vegetable dish.  However, sweet and sour children are another matter.  If your kids experience mood swings monumental enough to make your head spin, it may be time for outside intervention.

Particularly for those of us with teens in the house, a normal adoptive parent’s (or any kind of parent’s) question may be:  are these average mood swings, or is my child mentally ill?  Lots of adopted kids in particular have unknown family medical histories, but let’s just put it this way:  if the birth parent(s) were mental health2unemployed, living in a shack, drinking themselves to death, beating and starving their children until they’re taken away by the state… they might not have had all of their marbles.

Common diagnoses in the life of adoptees may be Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), and more.  Which of these are mental illnesses?   Some are, Mental Healthand some aren’t.  Others may lead to mental illness.

Most mental health professionals suggest that your child may have an issue if there are mood swings and behavioral changes.

Okay, Houston, we have a problem.

Combine that with any physical symptoms such as repeated headaches and stomaches, neglect of personal appearance, low energy level, and any attempt to self-medicate or escape life which may indicate a need for mental health treatment.

The good news is that with identification and intervention, mental illnesses can be managed.
