The Art of Marriage

The_Art_of_MarriageI’m sitting in a marriage seminar as I type. As a matter of fact, I’m helping to lead the series of six meetings, which we’ve spread over two action-packed nights. Truth be told, not a lot of couples have time to focus on their marriage.

Until there are issues. Problems. Kids. Bills. thSickness. Careers. Differing points of view.

Then we really don’t have time. More pressure. More breakdowns.

troubled-relationshipIt’s my background. It’s the circumstances. It’s the partner. It’s a battle.

Anger. Resentment. Withdrawal. Isolation.

Instead, tonight we hear that marriage depicts God’s design and molds us into a couple, a unit, a strong bond to encourage, love, and support one another and any ensuing family. Together, we can conquer and overcome.

How do we engage in this delicate dance? How do we coordinate our efforts when it’s so much easier to take over and do things ourselves, or withdraw and give ourselves to our own work?

Are we willing to be changed? Are we going toart-of-marriage-caribbean respect and love and lay down our lives, or fight for rights and make our own demands?

Whoever said that marriage is meeting another person halfway was a poor judge of distance.

Marriage matters. My heart warmed to see thcouples and singles gathering. They desired to be on top of their game.even before any extreme problems surfaced.

Some were quite poor, and others quite well off. One had gone through a debilitating disability, another in danger of losing their home. This one’s mate had disappeared and these two were semi-newlyweds. Some had infertility issues, others had turbulent teens.

Despite the ups and downs of life, they were willing to give two hours this week and next week to make their marriage a priority. That may not be enough to turn their world upside down, and homework will be needed, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

Is your marriage on the front burner?
