The Gym –versus- The Outdoors

walkingI like to go outside. Basically, it’s because I’m inside all the time. But if you come right down to it… it’s generally quieter for me at the gym.

I try power-walking at night and in the morning. My wide arc takes me on several passes on a set path of an outdoor area of lakes and shops. I might pause to take a picture of ducks and their ducklings giving me the evil eye for not feeding them, but otherwise I call out a “Good morning!” to a couple of workers up at the crack of dawn. Otherwise… I’m there to do my thing. If I don’t come early enough, loud pop music blares over the loudspeakers, hardly a commune with nature.

An elderly couple stops me.

“Ya’ll know when the shops open up?” they inquire.sporting-goods

“I believe at 10:00 a.m., but there’s a Starbucks nearby that should already be open…” I offer.

“Do y’all know of a sporting goods shop here?” the man asks.

Why he calls me, myself and I “y’all” is anyone’s guess. Right now, I am the pseudo-makeshift-ambassador of a resort area, so I decide not to address it.

belt“Well, there’s a tennis and golf store on the highway nearby…” I suggest, not wanting to acknowlege the fact that he appears to engage in neither of these sports.

It might be sports gear for a gift. You never know.

“No, no,” he shakes his head. “Wrastlin’. I need one of them big wrastlin’ belts with the name on it.”

“Oh, I see,” I nod, not seeing at all. A wrestling belt? I kid you not. “Maybe they would have Treadmillsomething online?” I wonder.

“Uh-huh…” the two of them get a far-away look and I realize they might not know how to navigate the internet. After a few more pleasantries, I wish them well and take my leave.

For some reason, folks think I’m a goodwill ambassador. I guess I am a pleasant person, lol. Everyone approaches me with questions great and small.

Not so at the gym. There, I can climb onboard a treadmill, or elliptical, or any number of machines and not a soul bothers me. Probably because they’re amused over a middle-aged woman trying to fight the tide of evil in her own body….

thThere are individual TVs on each machine with subtitles, or  you can plug-in and listen with headphones. There are rules against grunting and groaning. There are friends who come together, but they rarely speak very loudly.

Kinda nice. But to enjoy a non-packed atmosphere, you need to come before 5:00 a.m. or after 9:00 p.m. Which I can do, but it tends to upset the dogs to hear me coming and going.

For now, I guess I’ll just stick with marching in place while drying my hair and reading my Bible, then after a few early-morning duties, heading outside for a power walk whenever possible, and finally, hitting the gym late at night about the time the kids go to bed.

Some days I do nothing much. Other days, it feels like I do too much in an effort to make up for lost time. Yet, in general, I feel better when I move a few miles a day.

Do you make an effort to exercise? And where?
