The House is on Fire!

fire3Yes, I know, these kind of things never happen to you. But in our house….

Long story short, yesterday we had a kitchen fire. Benedetto had started heating some oil in a frying pan after a very busy day when he was preparing some things for dinner. (All I can say is that I am thankful that it was not me cooking dinner, or I never would have heard the end of it….)

Anyway, we took five minutes to show the kids several special items in the living room. As we were chatting, he jumped up and ran to the kitchen. This is not an unusual occurrence in our home because we often have food cooking on the stove, other items baking in the oven, a dog barking to come inside from the fenced backyard, etc.

This time, it was different. He was met with flames shooting up to the ceiling, emanating from Kitchen-firesaid frying pan. Thinking quickly, he grabbed a box of baking soda from the cabinet, costing less than a dollar and doused the fire. (Hopefully, he will never again give me a hard time for buying 2 or 3 boxes at a time, one for the fridge, one for baking, one for… house fires!?)

He grabbed the scorched pan and ran it outside, smoking to high heaven. He corralled the dogs and made sure that the French doors to the dining room were firmly closed, thus blocking passage and smoke, confining it to the kitchen. He opened windows and doors and then ran around fly-swatting, all while holding his breath.

Quite a day. Just rooms away, the rest of us knew nothing of it.

Until we smelled the acrid smoke for the next several hours. All I can say is: Thank you, Jesus, for saving us and Febreeze is our friend. Throughout the night, I could smell the smoke that was now lingering in carpets and drapery. It gave me some nightmarish dreams, for sure.

sodaSmoke detectors? We have been doing renovations and some parts of the kitchen are in an unfinished state. However, that’s no excuse to allow smoke alarms to be dismantled, removed, or allow their batteries to lapse.  This small piece of technology can save your life.

Take it from me, the survivor of an event that need never have happened: for yourself and for your loved ones, please check your smoke alarms now. Make sure they are active and in prime spots around the house.

Thank you. Maybe tonight we can all sleep soundly.
