Destinations, Dreams and Dogs - International adventure with a fast-track family (& dogs) of Old World values, adopting the Russian-Italian-American good life on the go…!

The Monday Mug Club: #2

I vascillated over this little mug: “ Should I, or shouldn’t I?”  much like many adoptive parents question their decision to bring home a new child.  Sitting in the Moscow market all by its lonesome, the cup had a fragile quality to it, and I wondered if it could go the distance without being shattered enroute.

Throwing caution to the wind, I ended my negotiations at Ismailovsky with, “Horoshoh,” and told the shopkeeper I’d take it, almost as an afterthought.  But the delicate painting of the Kremlin and St. Basil’s made me smile.

A nice navy blue and creamy white, the mug stood out from our other souvenirs, mostly brightly colored.  Russia was a red country, often interspersed with blacks and golds, which suited me fine.  But the bit of blue was nice.

There was a single word on either side of the cup:  MOSCOW in English on one, MOCKBA in Cyrillic on the other.  Take your pick.  Life was of your choosing.

Somehow it spoke to me of the possibilities all around us in life.  As I was bringing home more children from Russia, I liked the fact that these mini-mementoes would surround us.  I didn’t want life divided up into “Here” and “There”, “Past” and “Present” but instead, enjoying a continuum along which our family would freely move.

Happy Monday!

(Send in a photo of your favorite mug and a few sentences about why it’s special to you.  McDonald’s paper cups or Starbucks-to-go also count….)
