The Scary Suitcase Switch

The-Ultimate-Round-the-World-Travel-Packing-List-for-Girls-THUMBNAILNo, this is not a piece about Halloween.  It’s my real life, which can be scary enough at times.  For several days, I’ve had 3 or 4 suitcases open– packing, packing, packing.

No, this is not for the whole family.  It’s for me.  Not to mention various tote bags holding other items of interest to go with each suitcase– high rubber rain/mud boots and a sun hat here, silver stillettos and a wedding bouquet there, dog food laid out in ziplocks on the kitchen counter since I am here and the dogs are elsewhere with their own travel bag.

I’m packing for several back-to-back events and it’s not easy.  The kids have Packing-List3been handed their packing lists, and that’s difficult enough.  Just because it’s on the list doesn’t always mean that it gets into the bag.  But supervising their movements 24/7 leaves me little time for myself.

And I need lots of time.

Which is why I’ve been having nightmares.  Not so much outright nightmares where I wake up in a cold sweat, but let’s call them anxiety dreams.

I wake up imagining that I’ve taken the silver stillettos to archaeology.  There I am, in the middle of nowhere, hiking through waist-high grass and praying that ticks and snakes are on sabbatical or have already gone south for the winter, teetering ultimatepackinglist600around in fancy-shmancy clothes.  And there are no stores within 500 miles of our site.

So I check, and recheck.  It only heightens the anxiety.

Bread, peanut butter and jelly, apples, water for Petya’s lunches.  Tuna fish, apples, water for my lunches.  Snacks, check.  Sunscreen, check.  Bug repellent, check, check.

Mechanical pencils, smear-resistant pens, field journal, clipboards.kids

Pocket kleenex (um, we’re in the wild here).

Rain slicker, hat and gloves, sweater.  Whether 40 degrees or 80 degrees, we’ll be ready.

Makeup.  (Don’t want to scare anyone.)

Checklists are my friend.
