Who Controls Your Future?

PlanningIf you asked me who controls my future, I would say, bottom line: God. But no so fast. We have a part to play, as well. Which is both the terrifying, as well as the exhilarating, aspect of the equation.

When we miss it occasionally and then suffer the consequences, that’s not God. That’s us!

So how come so many are living so far from their intended Promised Land?

Because it’s difficult and time-consuming for most people to plan ahead more than five minutes. They refuse to do it. And it shows in their life outcomes: their abysmal career trajectory, their lack of home upkeep, their refusal to visit a doctor or dentist, their non-maintenance of friendships and personal relationships through any small acts of kindness and conversation. Only the crises of life merit their attention.

Ask what they’ll be eating today: whatever they can “throw together” or “find” or “grab”. No planning involved. Ask if they’ll be getting a Planning-2haircut or going on a job interview: they’ll see if they have any time leftover.  Maybe.

Nothing is ever intentional. There are no priorities without someone from the outside prodding or pressuring them. So they avoid others. Their mantra? Leave me alone. Their pastime? Sleep or play, zone out one way or another.

Don’t you think it’s time to break out of that? If “business as usual” has meant being constantly “a day late and a dollar short”, isn’t it time for a change? You would be the one creating that change. Yes, you.

By recording your dreams and goals on paper, you set in motion the process of becoming the person you most want to be. Put your future in good hands – your own.” ~Mark Victor Hansen

Today, today before noon, write down your top five goals, the things that would be the most vital to actually overhauling your entire life. What outcomes do you desire? To put it succinctly: what do you hope people might say at your funeral? Write it down. Five major outcomes of your life.

Extra credit: write the first step or two toward accomplishing each of the five goals. And then start doing them. And refer back to the list (in your pocket, on your phone, on your desk, taped to the bathroom mirror and the kitchen cabinet and the steering wheel of your car!) daily.

It might take five minutes or fifty-five minutes, but it should be easy enough to write and challenging enough to undertake.planning

However, it will save you boatloads of wasted time every day and a lifetime of regret.  You will gain focus.

Start writing! (And consult with a loved one if this involves them, as well.)
